Reconsider Vehicle Access from Binley Road into Biggin Hall Crescent

We the undersigned petition the Council to reconsider vehicle access from Binley Road into Biggin Hall Crescent. This petition is NOT against Stoke Bakery. It’s a valued local business and we’re not asking for it to be restricted. The issue is whether the current road layout and traffic arrangements are working safely for residents, motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and local businesses. We understand that the restriction into Biggin Hall Crescent was introduced as part of the Binley Cycleway. We’re not asking for the cycleway to be removed. We’re asking Coventry City Council to review the current arrangement and investigate whether a safe, controlled left turn from Binley Road into Biggin Hall Crescent could be introduced while keeping proper protection for cyclists and pedestrians.

I live on Brympton Road, and I’m asking local residents to support a petition about access from Binley Road into Biggin Hall Crescent.

When I am working in my office in Binley, my journey home should be relatively straightforward.

But because cars cannot currently turn left from Binley Road into Biggin Hall Crescent, I have to continue along Binley Road, turn into Bull’s Head Lane, pass Lindsey Road and Grant Road, then turn onto Harris Road and travel down to get home to Brympton Road.

This isn’t just about inconvenience. The alternative route can create some very difficult and potentially hazardous situations.

At the Binley Road/Bull’s Head Lane junction, there is a bus stop right on the corner.

During peak times, there have been many occasions when a bus is stopped there while traffic is approaching from the opposite direction. This can make it extremely difficult to see clearly and safely enter Bull’s Head Lane.

There are also occasions when a pedestrian or cyclist is crossing and a vehicle has stopped to allow them to pass.

When this happens, a vehicle turning into Bull’s Head Lane can end up with the rear of the car still protruding into Binley Road while waiting for the junction to clear.

That creates a potential hazard for traffic travelling along Binley Road and can cause traffic to build up, particularly when a bus is stopped and passengers are getting on or off.

Bull’s Head Lane can also become very busy because of the very popular Stoke Bakery.

And to be absolutely clear:

This petition is NOT against Stoke Bakery.

It’s a valued local business and we’re not asking for it to be restricted.

We understand that the restriction into Biggin Hall Crescent was introduced as part of the Binley Cycleway.

We’re asking Coventry City Council to review the current arrangement and investigate whether a safe, controlled left turn from Binley Road into Biggin Hall Crescent could be introduced while keeping proper protection for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Council originally identified Bull’s Head Lane as an alternative route. But residents are now experiencing the reality of that alternative route, including congestion, buses, pedestrians, cyclists and increased traffic.

We don’t claim that opening the left turn will definitely reduce congestion until the Council’s highways engineers assess it. Instead, asking them to investigate whether it could improve traffic flow especially at peak times.
