Families should be able to visit the graves of their loved ones knowing they are safe, respected and protected.
I have started this petition after my daughter's grave was targeted by thieves twice in less than 48 hours.
Since sharing my experience publicly, I have been contacted by a number of other bereaved families who have reported thefts from graves at both Canley Crematorium and Lentons Lane Cemetery. These reports suggest this is not an isolated incident and that further action is needed to improve security across Coventry’s cemeteries and crematoria.
Coventry City Council previously considered a petition relating to cemetery security in 2018. Since then, CCTV technology has become significantly more effective and affordable. Given the continuing reports of theft and vandalism, now is the right time for the Council to review security across all council-managed burial sites.
This petition is not asking for cameras to monitor every individual grave. Instead, it asks the Council to introduce appropriate security measures, including CCTV at entrances, exits and other suitable locations, alongside any additional measures that would help deter crime, protect memorials and assist police investigations.
Every family deserves the reassurance that they can visit the resting place of a loved one without fear of theft or vandalism.
We also ask the Council to publish the findings of its security review and set out what improvements will be made, along with the reasons for any decisions.
