The current criteria regarding whether or not average speed cameras will be installed on local roads, where high speed traffic is an issue, depends on how many reported serious or fatal road traffic injuries have occurred in a given time period - one to five years. Prevention and peace of mind for residents is therefore not the focus or concern. As the criteria is based on national guidelines only, we believe it is in the power of Coventry City Council to change the criteria. We therefore ask, as is the case with Allesley Old Road, London Road and Hearsall Lane/Common, that average speed cameras be installed on Duggins Lane, Tanners Lane and Station Avenue where traffic speeds have been recorded well above safe limits and as high as 60mph. Although there have not been any serious or fatal road traffic injuries on these roads there have been serious road traffic incidents and near misses. Surely prevention, safety and peace of mind should inform the criteria not statistics.
