Lift Coventry museum entry fees

We the undersigned petition the Council to consider removing entry fees to Coventry’s museums: * Coventry Transport Museum * Herbert Art Gallery and Museum

These institutions are vital to preserving and sharing our city’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Bringing back free access would re-encourage wider public engagement, particularly from families, students, and low-income residents who may be discouraged by admission costs. Since the introduction of museum entry fees, a local and independent coffee shop, Baxter Baristas—which had successfully thrived at Coventry Transport Museum for 16 years and opened a second location at the Herbert Art Gallery just a year ago—has seen a noticeable decline in foot traffic and sales, as fewer visitors are spending time in the area before or after their museum visits. Looking at other UK cities such as Birmingham and Liverpool, it's clear that removing museum fees significantly increases visitor numbers and boosts the local economy through greater footfall and tourism. Additionally, free museum access supports lifelong learning, community cohesion, and pride in Coventry’s identity. At a time when access to arts and culture—and supporting small, independent businesses—is more important than ever, making museums free again would be a meaningful and inclusive investment in our city's future.
